niigata eya exhibition 644

The format of Niigata Eya’s “Eya-Bin” is based on the exhibition guide of an art gallery, “Gendai Garou” (Gendai Gallery), that used to be in Tokyo. This sentence written by the “exhibition planner” also imitated the introductory sentence of “Gallery Kara”(From the gallery) by Toru Sunouchi, who was the owner of the Gendai Garou and an outstanding art essayist. This year marks the 35th anniversary of Sunouchi’s death. I would like to re-breathe air into that narrow but comfortable gallery by displaying the paintings of Ritsuko Minemura and Shunichi Midorikawa, who are related painters.
Minemura passed away in 1995, and Midorikawa died last year. Both of them drew “people” well. Minemura draws out her model’s aura like a clever slight-of-hand trick.Midorikawa makes a face that no one knows from the lines that run around the canvas. Despite their opposite approaches, both are truly unique and lively. The two, whose appearances were as unique as the paintings, and the smile of Toru Sunouchi, whose eyes glittered like a child’s in front of a good painting, overlapped there.
