　昨冬に万代島美術館で開催された田畑あきら子展は、28歳で逝った画家のすさまじい制作への凝集を教える好企画だった。その田畑が心奪われる、独自の創作力を爆発させた同世代の画家が渡辺隆次だった。その頃の濃密で鬼気迫る作品は、その後八ヶ岳山麓に身を移した長い時間の中で、まるで鉱物が植物に変わるように変わった。田畑がその後も生きて、これらの80代の渡辺の絵を見たらどう感じただろう。あの「鬼」のなかに、こんなチャーミングな「コロボックル」が隠れ、棲んでいたことにおどろき、大笑いするのではないだろうか。同じようにチャーミングなお婆さんになったあきら子と渡 辺が、雨のなか、蕗の下で語り合っている姿を想像すると、胸が熱くなる。

　The Akirako Tabata exhibition held last winter at the Niigata Bandaijima Art Museum was an excellent showcase that revealed the intense creative energy of this painter, who passed away at the age of 28. The artist of her generation who captivated Tabata and unleashed his own unique creative power was Ryuji Watanabe. His dense, intense works from that period underwent a transformation—much like a mineral turning into a plant—during the long years he spent living at the foot of Mount Yatsugatake.If Tabata had lived to see these paintings by Watanabe, now in his 80s, how would she have felt? Wouldn’t she have been surprised, and burst out laughing, to discover that such a charming “Koropokkuru/Korobokkuru” was hiding and living within that “demon”? My heart swells when I imagine Akirako as an equally charming elderly woman and Watanabe chatting together under a butterbur leaf in the rain.

渡辺隆次（わたなべ りゅうじ）
1939年東京都生まれ。武蔵野美術学校（現・武蔵野美術大学）本科・西洋画卒業。東京学芸大養護科修了。77年から八ヶ岳山麓で制作を続ける。著書に『きのこの絵本』『山のごちそう』『八ヶ岳 風のスケッチ』（ちくま文庫）、『花づくし 実づくし　菱和殿天井画』（木馬書館）、『山里に描き暮らす』（みすず書房）、『森の天界図像 わがイコン胞子紋 渡辺隆次きのこ画文集』（大日本絵画）等。今年7～8月にフィリア美術館（北杜市）で個展開催。

Ryuji Watanabe
Born in Tokyo in 1939. Graduated from the Musashino Art School (now Musashino Art University) with a degree in Western Painting. Completed the Department of Nursing at Tokyo Gakugei University. Has been creating art at the foot of Mount Yatsugatake since 1977. Watanabe’s publications include Kinoko no Ehon (Picture Book of Mushrooms), Yama no Gochiso (Mountain Delicacies), Yatsugatake: Kaze no Sketch (Skeches of the Wind), (Chikuma Bunko), Hana-zukushi Mi-zukushi Ryowaden Tenjyoga (A Bounty of Flowers and Fruits: The Ceiling Paintings of Ryowa-den), (Mokuba Shokan), Yamazato ni Kakikurasu (Living and Painting in a Mountain Village) (Misuzu Shobo), and Mori no Tenkaizushou Waga Icon Houshimon－Watanabe Ryuji Kinoko Gabunsyu (Icons of the Forest: My Iconic Spore Patterns—Ryuji Watanabe’s Collection of Mushroom Paintings and Essays), (Dainippon Kaiga), among others. He held a solo exhibition at the Philia Museum (Hokuto City) from July to August of 2026.

　3年前の私の水彩画展で、菅野が求めた絵が、久しぶりに訪ねた新発田の家の玄関にかけられていた。私たちの共通点は「絵具の色」に自由を感じる心情かもしれない。写実画のように環境（外界）の色に絵具を近づけるのではなく、絵具そのものに井戸を感じ、下っていく描き方だ。
　菅野は土も顔料にし、支持体（ゲル状の和紙）と彩色が同時並行する手法だから、絵具は素材と言い換えるべきかもしれない。版画から移行したのは、自由と楽しさがあったからだと語っていた。その楽しさの内奥に菅野は、他の誰のものでもない自分の絵を発見し、つくりだしてきた。
　今回は1990年代の版画や過去作も合わせて展示する。菅野くに子の歩いた跡を一緒にたどりたい。

At my watercolor exhibition held last autumn, I discovered that the painting that Kanno had purchased was hanging in the entryway of her home in Shibata, which I had visited for the first time in a long while. Perhaps what we have in common is a sense of freedom we find in “the colors of paint.” Rather than matching the paint to the colors of the environment (the outside world) as in realistic painting, our approach is to sense a well within the paint itself and paint by delving deeper into it.
Since Kanno uses even soil as pigment and employs a technique where the application of color and the preparation of the support (gel-like Japanese paper) occur simultaneously, perhaps I should rephrase “paint” as “material.”
Kanno once told me that she transitioned from printmaking because it offered freedom and joy. Deep within that delight, Kanno has discovered and created her own unique style of painting—one that belong to no one else.
This exhibition also features prints from the 1990s and earlier works. Let us to trace the path Kuniko Kanno has walked together.

菅野くに子（かんの くにこ）
東京都生まれ。武蔵野美術大学油画科卒業後、リトグラフ、エッチングの制作を続け、98年より手漉き和紙による制作を始める。ガレリアグラフィカ、ギャラリー舫、ギャラリーゴトウ、ギャラリーアビアント（以上東京）、アートスペースエリコーナ（いわき）、新発田市市民ギャラリー、mu-an（長岡）などで個展。新潟絵屋での発表は2002年以来10回目。

Kuniko Kanno
Born in Tokyo. After graduating from the Oil Painting Department at Musashino Art University, she continued to create lithographs and etchings, and in 1998 began creating works using handmade Japanese paper. She has held solo exhibitions at Galleria Grafica, Gallery Fune, Gallery Gotō, and Gallery A Biantet (all in Tokyo), as well as at Art Space Elicona (Iwaki), the Shibata City Civic Gallery, and mu-an (Nagaoka). This is her 10th exhibition at Niigata Eya since 2002.
