niigata eya exhibition 710
This is Hiroko Goto’s second solo exhibition since she moved her studio from Nagaoka to Nagano, and I involuntarily raised my voice when I saw these paintings. The mountains loomed even closer, and I felt a shiver run through me—a sensation that was both intimidating and comforting, a mix of fear and joy. I recall the stories Goto shared about her days studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Though I’ve forgotten the specifics, she said that the careful dialogue she had with her teachers about composition and artistic expression was a valuable learning experience. The “language of painting” that became ingrained in her during her youth now responds instinctively and naturally to the nature and seasons of Nagano—a landscape that could be described as a non-horizontal, dynamic space. The lively rhythm of the conversation is captured exactly as it is in the visual language and the voices. (Exhibition Planner/Text: Hiroshi Okura / Organized by: Niigata Eya + Exhibition Planner)
